This sports hall design and build project was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Kent.
The new build steel-framed building features the main sports hall with four-court capacity. Additionally, it is equipped with an extension to the changing room facilities, weights room, PE department office, link corridor to existing buildings and some much-needed storage space.
Work on the sports hall was carried out alongside a new canteen development project. Further work to expand the school and create a new teaching block is currently underway.
We demolished the existing dated sports hall to make way for the new building. All demolition, site clearance and groundworks were undertaken in-house by our own team and in-house plant.
We formed the new building using a traditional portal steel frame, and light weight cold formed secondary steel. The structure was then cladded using a proprietary insulated architectural panel system.
A key challenge was addressing a near 1.2m level change from the sloping ground level to the existing floor level. This was required to obtain the level recommended in the flood risk assessment. To achieve this we designed concrete upstand walls to retain a mass-filled granular base for a ground-bearing floor slab. Given the large spans involved, this method provided significant cost savings over suspended floor slabs.
This project forms part of extensive phased development works that we have been involved with over the past 3 years. It represents a significant multi-million investment to improve facilities and accommodate an increasing upturn in pupil numbers.
